Media Photo Release:
In 2004, eight North Carolina Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter
units served in the Iraq war with the distinction of being the first North
Carolina Blackhawk crewmen to serve. Inspired by the Wright Brothers
National Memorial theme of "First in Flight" Major Brian Pierce instructed
his crewmen to paint a graphic of the Wright flyer along with the words
"First in Flight" on the engine cowling of their helicopters. The crewmen
flew the Blackhawks and also created and wore "Wright Flyer" patches with
pride during their overseas deployment. In addition, the crewman helped to
build a two-story recreation center which they named "OBX." A temporary
exhibit of their photographs will be on display beginning Veteran's Day,
November 11, 2009, a "fee free" day for everyone, at the Wright Brothers
Pavilion.
